Making A
Drop Shot Rig
Drop shotting has become extremely popular, especially for suspended fish or bass that are finicky.
The drop shot rig is simply a way to fish your bait off the bottom. The weight rests on the bottom and the bait floats above it, providing fish with a different look. It is best fished on light line and spinning rods and reels. 4 to 8 pound test is the norm when drop shotting.
Start by tying on the hook using a Palomar knot. Leave the tag end the length you want the bait to be off the bottom. 16 to 20 inches is a good length. If possible, use your electronics to pinpoint suspended fish and use that measurement for the tag end. When you tie the hook on, bring the tag end back through the eye of the hook from the top down to ensure the hook will stand straight out.
To use the Excalibur Tungsten Drop Shot Weight, simply put the tag end of the line into the wire eye and pull it into the top of the eye, cinching the line. No knot is needed. The weight is now secured to the line. This method allows you to pull free when hung up, leaving the weight behind but saving the rest of your rig.
Finally, rig a small bait, such as a 3 or 4 inch YUM Dinger on the hook. If fishing open water, hook the Dinger through the nose of the bait. If fishing brush, Texas rig the Dinger to render it weedless.
